1881 (Viena, Austria) – 1942 (Petrópolis, Brasil)

Nació en una próspera y culta familia judía en Viena, capital del multiétnico imperio de los Habsburgo, donde coexistían austríacos, húngaros, eslavos y judíos, entre muchos otros. Franz-Joseph era un rígido autócrata y su reinado no debe ser idealizado, pero proporcionó a Zweig una plataforma de pluralidad cultural en un momento en que Europa se consumía en el nacionalismo. Zweig comenzó a escribir "El mundo de ayer" después de dejar Austria en 1934, anticipando que los nazis tomarían su patria. En 1904 apareció su primera novela, género de especial frecuencia en su carrera. Zweig desarrolló un estilo literario muy particular, que aunaba una cuidadosa construcción psicológica con una brillante técnica narrativa. Además de sus propias creaciones en teatro, periodismo y ensayo, Zweig trabajó en traducciones de autores como Paul Verlaine, Charles Baudelaire y Émile Verhaeren. En el apogeo de su carrera literaria, en las décadas de 1920 y 1930, fue uno de los escritores más traducidos y populares del mundo.
